A cake pan that fosters unlimited creativity... July 29, 2010 Mz_Liz So, this pan is comprised of two semi-circles and two ring on which you balance the circles for baking. I agree, it's difficult to get the circular portion exactly level on the ring so your cakes almost inevitably come out a bit slanted. Now, that being said, i've had no problem slicing off the uneven layer when it comes time to putting the two half spheres together. I can't being to explain how much fun i've had with this pan. I've made several different cakes, none of which really constitute a "sports ball." My next cake will be a thermal detonator, (from a very popular sci-fi flick) for my beloved. Maybe this pan isn't quite for beginners but, if you've got the dedication, give it a go. In short, I love this product. Happy baking!
perfection! July 26, 2010 ashley prioreschi (MANTUA, NJ, US) LOVE this item! I make cakes for a living and I use this pan often. It is a great buy!!!
Good Buy April 8, 2010 A. Beeman (Honolulu, HI) I purchased the Wilton Sports Ball Pan Set less than a week before my son's birthday not knowing if it would make it in time. It arrived within a couple of days.
The cake baked a little longer than the directions say but when it was finished it was perfect. It came out of the pan easily (after it had been greased and floured, of course) and fit together to form a perfect ball.
I like that there are directions and templates included.
Overall it was one of the easiest cakes I've ever made. I'm positive I will use it again.
Sports ball pan January 24, 2010 Reverie (Memphis, TN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is 6 inches in diameter and creates a perfect sphere. Both halves actually balance on their own metal rings, but be sure you reduce your baking time and temperature - it consistently takes me more than 1 hour to thoroughly bake a cake with this ball pan. The metal doesn't feel heavy duty so I expect to see more scratches down the line. I doubt it'll change how the pan performs though.
I haven't found a need to use both halves, but the pan has been useful in shaping cakes made to look like a turtle, a large igloo, Tiffany lamp shade, and UFO cake.
Just like the mini ball pan, you have to generously grease this otherwise sticking will be a huge problem.
Worked out well July 19, 2009 Amy Herrera (Bay Area, CA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My friend makes cakes so I purchased the Sports Ball Pan for her to make my 6 year old son a Bakugan cake (Little round transforming toys)for his birthday party. The cake turned out great! It looked exactly like a Bakugan. She said the pan was easy to use. The only negative thing is it is smaller than it looks on line. My friend made a sheet cake and put the round cake on top of it so there would be enough cake for all the guests.
